Sylvester Program for Academic Research & Knowledge (SPARK)

SPARK is a collaborative initiative between the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) and the University of Miami Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (UGR). Launched in fall 2024, the program engages undergraduate students in cancer research across various fields (laboratory, computational, clinical) to enhance the pipeline for future Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. candidates interested in cancer.  

Program Information

Students begin the program during their sophomore year and commit to participating for six total semesters. The program offers students the opportunity to earn academic credit or stipends, while dedicating a minimum of 8 hours per week in their assigned labs. Additionally, required to: 

  • Attend monthly one-on-one check in meetings with the UGR office 
  • Participate in 4 professional development sessions during the year 
  • Present their research at the annual Research, Creativity, and Innovation Forum  
  • Submit a deliverable at the end of each semester (type varies by cohort year) 

Students are also encouraged to attend monthly Sylvester Colloquium series and seminars, as well as the Sylvester Retreat and Zubrod Conference.

UM undergraduates from all disciplines are invited to apply.

  • A letter of recommendation (required if selected to advance to the interview stage)
